Magna Carta
The Magna Carta or ‘Great Charter’ is famous throughout the world and the rights and freedoms it enshrines have been incorporated into many documents including the 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights. It continues to be relevant today: 800 years after it was first issued by King John on 15 June 1215.
This exhibition explores its origins and the role of the local barons William D’Aubigny from Belvoir in Leicestershire and Saer de Quincy, Earl of Leicester who were two of the 25 barons guaranteeing the terms of the Charter. Both men are remembered by history as parties to one of the most famous documents in the world.
It also explains why the charter is still important in guaranteeing the rights and freedoms we enjoy today.
